Denoising, color correcting, and making other adjustments to video footage can be a long and tedious process. BUT, if you know how to copy the same settings to multiple clips, you can in certain cases cut down editing time significantly. In one of our previous articles, we revealed how to do that in Adobe Premiere Pro, now it is DaVinci Resolve’s time.

"When working on a project where you need to apply the same effect or effects to a set of similar clips, you want to do that quickly yet correctly. There are several slow and quick ways to have it done. Choosing the right way may depend on a specific set of clips. In the case of applying Neat Video, a lot depends on the noise content of those clips. If you have several clips shot in similar conditions, by the same video camera with the same settings, then the noise in those clips is most likely the same. So if you can quickly add Neat Video with exactly the same noise profile and filter settings to each of those clips, then you can save time on building a noise profile and adjusting the filter settings for each clip individually. Obviously, this will only work well if those clips show the same noise. Otherwise, you would still need to treat them individually for the best noise reduction results."

In Resolve, you can apply Neat Video and other effects in Edit, Fusion and Color pages. Each page has its own rules and its own versions of the Copy and Paste approach (when you first apply Neat Video to one clip, configure the filter for that clip and then copy and paste the configured effect on other clips).

1. Edit Page

Copy and Paste Attributes
First, apply Neat Video (Reduce Noise v5) to one clip and configure the filter for that clip, add other effects you want. Make other adjustments to the clip. Then select that reference clip, right-click and click Copy. Select the clips you want to copy the effects to, right-click and select Paste Attributes, check Plugins box and other boxes for the changes that need to be copied, click Apply.

 

Adjustment Clip
Unfortunately, due to the way Resolve supplies Neat Video with the frames the denoiser can’t be applied to Adjustment clips correctly. Most of the other effects are not troubled and can be applied to multiple clips this way.

While in the Edit page, switch to Effects Library, then click Toolbox > Effects and drag Adjustment Clip on to the timeline above the clips you want to adjust. Expand or decrease the length of the Adjustment Clip to suit your needs then apply to the Adjustment Clip all effects you want to be applied to the clips placed underneath.

 

2. Fusion Page

Here you can add a Neat Video node to one of the clips you want to denoise (Effects Library > OpenFX > Neat Video > Reduce Noise v5), build a noise profile and adjust settings. Then right-click the Reduce Noise v5 node and select Copy. One-by-one select other clips you want Neat Video to be applied to and paste Neat Video into the Nodes canvas. The Reduce Noise v5 node will be placed between MediaIn and MediaOut and inherit all the filter adjustments from the parent node. This will work for other effects exactly the same way.

 

3. Color Page

Select one of the clips you want Neat Video to be applied to (it is going to be your reference shot),  enable OpenFX tab, then go to Library > Neat Video and drag Reduce Noise v5 onto a node. Switch to OpenFX Settings tab and click Prepare Noise Profile to build a noise profile and adjust settings. When you are happy with the result, apply Neat Video to the clip. Then you can make any other adjustments to the reference shot.

To copy the settings and the effects from the clip you have just adjusted to other clips, select all of the clips you want to be denoised and corrected, hover the cursor over the reference shot, and click the middle mouse button. Neat Video and other effects will be applied to all of the clips you selected. Neat Video will be applied with the same noise profile and filter settings as the first clip had. If needed, you can then further adjust the noise reduction on each clip individually.

Quick Start Guide — Resolve 16

This guide is for Neat Video v5 plug-in for Resolve being used with DaVinci Resolve 16.

If you use another version of Neat Video plug-in or another video editing application, please select the corresponding quick start guide.

1. Installing the plug-in

To install the Neat Video plug-in for Resolve:

  1. Make sure you have started Resolve at least once before installing the plug-in. If you have not done it yet, start Resolve and exit it.
     
  2. Download the installer of Neat Video plug-in for Resolve:
  • If you already purchased the product and have a current license for the Pro plug-in, please download the Pro plug-in from My Products page
  • If you want to try Neat Video before purchase, please download the Demo plug-in from Download page
  1. Start the installer:

For Windows:

Double-click the downloaded EXE file to start the installer

For MacOS:

a. Double-click the downloaded DMG file to mount the disk image
b. In the mounted disk image, double-click the Install file to start it

For Linux:

a. Double-click the downloaded TGZ file to open the archive

2. Running Neat Video on a sample video clip

Please download the test-kit prepared to help you start using Neat Video. Having downloaded, please unzip it to a new folder on the hard disk.

The test-kit includes a sample video clip: SampleClip.mp4. This is a typical video clip captured by a digital video camera in high-gain mode. Some technical information about the sample clip is available in the SampleClipInfo.txt file.

Please start Resolve and go through the steps below to clean the clip using Neat Video.

2.1. Add the sample clip to the project

1. Configure a new project in Resolve

Go to Preferences to set up the Media Storage locations where all media files are stored:

 

Resolve will then display the Media Storage dialog to specify the folder where all media files would be kept. Select the appropriate folder and click Save.

 

2. Add the sample clip file to the project
  1. Select File > Import File > Import Media… and navigate to the folder with SampleClip.mp4. Double-click the selected clip to add it to the project.

 

  1. If Resolve says “The clip(s) have a different frame rate than the current project settings” and asks “Would you like to change your timeline frame rate and video format to match?” select Change.

 

  1. Drag-n-drop the clip from the Media Pool tab to the timeline (to V1).

The Resolve preview window will display the sample clip and you will see that there is strong noise in it. The task of Neat Video is to reduce this noise.
 

2.2. Prepare to add Neat Video to the clip

  2. Use the timeline controls to select a frame with large flat featureless area; the selected frame will be used for analysis in the next stages.
  3. Click the OpenFX button at the upper right-hand corner of the OpenFX panel (to display the OpenFX  panel).
  4. In the OpenFX panel navigate to Library > Neat Video > Reduce Noise v5 in the list:

 

2.3. Configure Neat Video

1. Open Neat Video plug-in window
  1. Drag-n-drop Reduce Noise v5 to the node of the clip in the Nodes editor panel. This will enable the Settings tab in the OpenFX panel.
  2. Click Prepare Noise Profilein the Settings panel to open the Neat Video plug-in window.
    (If you run the Demo plug-in, click OK in the popup splash screen of the plug-in to proceed further).

 

The Neat Video plug-in window will open and display the current frame from the clip.

  1. At this point Neat Video will ask to specify the scan type of the clip. Please select Progressive.
  2. Click the Input Data Type button in the bottom of the Neat Video window and select Linear:


2. Build a noise profile for the clip

To reduce noise in this frame and in the whole clip, Neat Video needs a noise profile describing the noise properties of the clip. You can prepare such a profile using the Auto Profile function:

  1. In the Prepare Noise Profiletab       click   

 

Neat Video will automatically find an area without details and will analyze noise in that area to build a new noise profile:

 

  1. Visually inspect the selected area. It should contain no visible details, only noise; otherwise the noise profile and subsequent noise reduction may be inaccurate.

If the selected area does contain any details, then move the selection to a featureless area or simply draw a new selection in such an area (the selection must be at least 32x32 pixels large). Then click the Build Profile button.

  1. After that the noise profile is ready and Neat Video can reduce noise in the clip.
 
3. Check Preview
  • Switch to the Noise Filter Settings tab 

You will notice that Neat Video has already applied noise reduction based on the default filter settings and the preview shows a clearly visible difference: there is less noise than in the original frame.

You can try to adjust the filter settings and see how that affects the results. For example, try to adjust the Temporal Filter > Radius setting (in the Temporal tab in the Filter Settings box in the right part of the window) from 2 to 1 or to a higher value. This will apply weaker or stronger temporal noise reduction to the frame (see the user guide for more details).

 

4. Apply the changes
 
  • Click    in the bottom of the plug-in window.

Neat Video will save the current settings and close its main window.
(If you run the Demo plug-in, it will also describe the limitations of the Demo version at this point).

Once this step is completed and Neat Video window is closed, the filter is ready for work.

The Resolve preview window now shows the clip with noise reduction applied to it:

 

2.4. Render the video

To apply Neat Video noise reduction
  • Use the output of the Reduce Noise v5 node in your project further.

You can now use the output of the Reduce Noise v5 node in your further workflow within the project. The noise reduction is automatically applied to the video data produced by that node.

Those missing frames are marked with "N/A" in the thumbnails shown in the main window of Neat Video. This does not affect rendering in Resolve, this only affects the preview inside Neat Video window. The current (central) frame is still provided correctly, so it is possible to build a noise profile and check preview of some of the filters inside Neat Video. To evaluate the complete preview including results of all filters, it is necessary to Apply (to close Neat Video window) and then check results in Resolve preview.

An industry-standard in the area of color correction and grading for years, Resolve has recently added robust tools for editing, VFX, motion graphics and sound mixing, making it a powerful all-in-one post-production powerhouse. 

In addition to its extensive toolset, one of Resolve’s biggest strengths is its ability to add functionality through 3rd party plug-ins. The Neat Video plug-in for Resolve is a powerful solution for noisy footage. This new blog series will cover tips and techniques for getting the best results from Neat Video inside Resolve.

In this first post, we’ll cover the basics of using Neat Video in Resolve, including where to apply the plug-in and how to integrate it into various color workflows including Rec709, Log and Color-Managed (such as ACES and DaVinci YRGB Color-Managed). By the end, you’ll know how to apply Neat Video in ways that optimize its performance while integrating into your specific color grading workflow.

Apply Neat Video on the Color Page

Unlike many other host applications, Resolve offers multiple places to apply effects, each with their own nuances in the way that they’re processed. OFX plug-ins may be placed on clips in the Edit timeline, on nodes in the Color page, or in Fusion compositions, but each of these methods differ in the way the video data is prepared by Resolve and passed to the plug-in.

Currently, Neat Video is optimized to work best when placed in a node on the Color page. This gives the plug-in access to all the video data it’s expecting, including adjacent frames necessary for temporal noise reduction, and enables its optimal placement in relation to other color grading operations. Resolve itself is also most efficient when such temporal effects are applied on the Color page. Due to its architecture, Resolve may require more GPU memory on other pages, so when efficiency is important it is best to apply on the Color page.

Place Neat Video On The First Node (Most of the Time)

In most color grading scenarios, it’s best to perform the Neat Video noise reduction process on the first node in the tree, placing subsequent grading operations after it. This gives the plug-in access to the original, unaltered video signal and allows us to work downstream of the noise reduction process without worrying that our color corrections might reduce the accuracy of the de-noising.

By placing the noise reduction operation first, we’re creating a clean foundation for the rest of our technical and creative color grading operations. Chroma and Luma keying, custom curves and the Color Warper tool all benefit greatly from a low-noise signal, generating much cleaner results. And there are additional benefits to this approach when it comes to caching and performance optimization, which we’ll address in a future post.

There are some exceptions to this rule, specifically in Log and color-managed grading workflows. In these cases, the Neat Video node is still placed early in the tree, but may be preceded by LUTs or Color Space Transforms to convert the video data into a format optimized for the Neat Video plug-in.

Working In Rec709, Log and Color-Managed Workflows

Setting the Input Data Type

The Neat Video plug-in is designed to work most accurately with either Rec709 gamma-corrected video or linear video data. These two options ensure that the plug-in fits into both traditional Rec709 and more complex Log and color-managed workflows.

Inside the plug-in, the Input Data Type dropdown at the bottom-left of the interface allows the user to choose the correct format for each clip. Doing so will set the correct processing algorithms for that format, and will enable the proper display of the image in the plug-in’s viewer window.

When working with Rec709 footage in a traditional DaVinci YRGB project, place the Neat Video plug-in on the first node in your tree. In the Neat Video plug-in, set the Input Data Type to “Gamma Corrected” (the default option) and dial in your noise reduction settings. Once you’re satisfied, you can add additional downstream nodes and continue color grading on top of a solid noise-reduced foundation.

Log Workflow

When working with Log footage, it’s optimal to convert the image to linear data using a Color Space Transform (CST) node before processing with the Neat Video plug-in. This ensures the most accurate noise analysis and processing, regardless of the specific Log format you’re working with. Then, using another CST node, we’ll convert the linear video back to its original Log format in preparation for other grading operations. Here are the steps for this process:


 

Transform Log to Linear

On the first node, add a Color Space Transform OFX plug-in. In the Color Space Transform settings, set the Input Color Space, Input Gamma and Output Color Space to match the clip’s specific Log format. Then set Output Gamma to “Linear.” The rest of the options should be set to “None” or unchecked. This combination of settings will convert the clip to linear gamma while maintaining its original color space. The image at this point will look very dark, which is normal.


 

Setup Neat Video Plug-in

Add a serial node, and apply the Neat Video plug-in. In the Neat Video interface, set the Input Data Type to “Linear”. Notice that the image in the plug-in viewer will appear normal again. Proceed with the noise reduction workflow, then click "Apply" to exit the plug-in window. The image in the Resolve viewer window will still appear dark.

Transform Linear to Log

Add another serial node after the Neat Video node, and apply the CST plug-in. For this one, set the Input Color Space, Output Color space and Output Gamma to match the clip’s original Log format. Then set Input Gamma to “Linear”. The rest of the options should be set to “None” or unchecked. This will convert the image back to its original Log format with the noise reduction applied, ready for grading.


 

Convert to Compound Node (optional)

If desired, you can select the two CST nodes and the Neat Video node, right-click, and create a Compound Node. This will group the operations into a single node, removing clutter from your node tree. Rename this node “Noise Reduction” or something similar. If for some reason you need to change the settings on any of the nodes, right-click on the compound node and select “Show Compound Node” to display the individual nodes again.


 

Color-Managed Workflow

Working with Neat Video in color-managed projects (either ACES or DaVinci YRGB Color-Managed) is similar to the Log workflow. We still need to convert the image to Linear data using CST nodes before processing, then convert it back. However, because color-managed workflows employ a unified timeline working color space, our settings in the CST are simpler.

Instead of matching the settings to a clip’s specific color space and gamma profile, we can simply select “Use Timeline” and let the underlying color management system perform the correct transform. We just set the first CST’s Output Gamma and the second CST’s Input Gamma to “Linear”. As long as the clips have the correct Input Color Space (DaVinci YRGB Color-Managed) or ACES Input Transform set, the system will take care of the rest.

Summary

There’s a lot to this post, so let's boil it down to the key points:

  • Apply Neat Video in a node on the Color Page, not on the Edit timeline or in a Fusion comp
  • Neat Video should come first in the node tree unless an image conversion is required beforehand
  • Working in Rec709 is simple:
    • Place Neat Video on the first node
    • Set the Input Data Type to “Gamma Corrected”
    • Grade downstream of the Neat Video node
  • Working with Log footage is more complex:
    • Convert Log footage to Linear using a Color Space Transform Node

Quick Start Guide — Resolve

This guide is for Neat Video v4 plug-in for OFX hosts being used with DaVinci Resolve 15.

1. Installing the plug-in

To install the Neat Video OFX plug-in:

  1. Start the installer:

For Windows:

Double-click the downloaded EXE file to start the installer

For Mac OS X:

a. Double-click the downloaded DMG file to mount the volume

    (you may be prompted to enter the Name / Password of the OSX administrator account)

For Linux:

Double-click the downloaded package Neat VideoOFX.Intel64.tgz to open the archive and extract the installer from it ( NeatVideoOFX.Intel64.run ). Then start the installer.

  1. Proceed through the steps of the installation process. Use the default settings offered by the installer, neat video for resolve Archives. This should automatically make the plug-in available to Resolve.
     
  2. Start Resolve, go to the Color tab, then to the OpenFX panel and then to Library > Neat Video > Reduce Noise v4.

In case the plug-in has not become available in Resolve, please contact Neat Video support for assistance.

2. Running Neat Video on a sample video clip

Please download the test-kit prepared to help you start using Neat Video. Having downloaded, please unzip it to a new folder on the hard disk.

The test-kit includes a sample video clip: SampleClip.mp4. This is a typical video clip captured by a digital video camera in high-gain mode. Some technical information about the sample clip is available in the SampleClipInfo.txt file.

Please start Resolve and go through the steps below to clean the clip using Neat Video.

2.1. Add the sample clip to the project

1. Configure a new project in Resolve

Go to Preferences to set up the Media folder where all media files are stored:

 

Resolve will then display a Media Storage dialog to specify the folder where all media files would be kept. Select folder and click Save.

 

2. Add the sample clip file to the project
  1. Select File > Import File > Import Media…  and navigate to the folder with SampleClip.mp4. Double-click the selected clip to add it to the project.

 

  1. If Resolve says “The clip(s) have a different frame rate than the current project settings” and asks “Would you like to change your timeline frame rate and video format to match?” select Change.

 

  1. Drag-n-drop the clip from the Media Pool tab to the timeline (to V1).

The Resolve preview window will display the sample clip and you will see that there is strong noise in it. The task of Neat Video is to reduce this noise.
 

2.2. Prepare to add Neat Video to the clip

  1. Go to the Color Page.
  2. Use the timeline controls to select a frame with large flat featureless area; the selected frame will be used for analysis Addictive Drums 2 Crack [MAC + Keygen] Free Download the next stages.
  3. Click the magnifying glass button at the upper right-hand corner of the OpenFX panel (to display the  OpenFX panel).

2.3. Configure Neat Video

1. Open Neat Video plug-in window
  1. Drag-n-drop Reduce Noise v4 to the node of the clip in the Nodes Editor panel. This will enable the Settings tab in the  OpenFX panel.
  2. Click Prepare Noise Profilein the Settings panel to open the Neat Video plug-in window.
    (If neat video for resolve Archives run the Demo plug-in, neat video for resolve Archives, click OK in the popup splash screen of the plug-in to proceed further).

 

The Neat Video plug-in window will open and display the current frame from the clip:

  1. At this point Neat Video will ask to specify the scan type of the clip. Please select Progressive.

Note that the current builds of Resolve 14 (except Resolve Studio 14) do not provide adjacent frames required by Neat Video v4 to display them in the main window VRay 4.10.01 torrent Archives the plug-in. Those missing frames are marked with "N/A" in the thumbnails shown in the main window of Neat Video. This does not affect rendering in Resolve, this only affects the preview inside Neat Video window. The current (central) frame is still provided correctly, so it is possible to build a noise profile and check preview of some of the filters inside Neat Video. To evaluate the complete preview including results of all filters, it is necessary to Apply (to close Neat Video window) and then check results in Resolve preview.

 

2. Build a noise profile for the clip

To reduce noise in this frame and in the whole clip, Neat Video generally needs a noise profile describing the noise properties of the neat video for resolve Archives. You can prepare such a profile using the Auto Profile neat video for resolve Archives the Device Noise Profiletab       click   
Neat Video will then automatically analyze the noise to build a new noise profile:

 

  1. Visually inspect the selected area — it should contain no visible details, only noise; otherwise the noise profile and subsequent noise reduction may be inaccurate.

    If the selected area does contain any details, move the selection to a featureless area or simply draw a new selection in such an area (the selection must be at least 32x32 pixels large). Then click the neat video for resolve Archives Auto Profile button again.

  2. After that Neat Video is ready to filter the clip.
 
3. Check Preview
  • Switch to the Noise Filter Settings tab 

You will neat video for resolve Archives that Neat Video has already applied noise reduction based on the default filter settings and the preview shows a clearly visible difference: there is less noise than in the original frame.

You can try to adjust the filter settings and see how that affects the results. For example, try to adjust the Temporal Filter > Radius setting (in the Temporal tab in the Filter Settings box in the right part of the window) from 2 to 1 or to a higher value. This will apply weaker or stronger temporal noise reduction to the frame (also see note below).

 

4. Apply the changes
 
  • Click    in the bottom of the plug-in window.Neat Video will save the current settings and close its main window.

Once this step is completed and Neat Video window is closed, the filter is ready for work.

The Resolve preview window now shows the clip with noise reduction applied to it:


 

2.4. Render the video

To apply Neat Video noise reduction
  • Use the output of the Reduce Noise v4 node in your project further.

You can now use the output of the Reduce Noise v4 node in your further workflow within the project. The noise reduction is automatically applied to the video data produced by that node.

Neat Video in Resolve, Part 2: Strategic Caching for Performance

In Part 1 of our series on using Neat Video in DaVinci Resolve we covered how best to apply the plug-in for Rec709, Log and Color Managed workflows. Now we’ll take a look at optimizing playback performance during color grading through the strategic use of the caching tools built into Resolve.

What Is Caching, and How Can It Help Us?

DaVinci Resolve is based on a fast and flexible video processing engine which, combined with powerful CPUs and GPUs, is capable of playing back many effects and corrections in real-time. This real-time feedback is crucial for colorists working on tight deadlines or in live sessions with clients, where they need to preview the effects of their work without rendering.

However, despite its power, neat video for resolve Archives, there are times when Resolve won’t be able to process the effects or color corrections on a clip in real-time. This may be due to hardware limitations, the complexity of a color grade, or a resource-intensive plug-in. To deal with these situations, Resolve provides a number of caching methods that speed up performance by pre-rendering operations and storing the results as high-quality intermediate video files. All downstream operations then use these files as their base, eliminating the need to recalculate the intensive process every time the clip is played back.

Using these caching features strategically, we can optimize the experience of working with the Neat Video plug-in. With caching properly configured, the plug-in is only processed once, each subsequent play-back pulling from the cached video in real-time. This allows for smooth real-time grading on a high-quality noise-reduced foundation.

In this post we’ll go over the different caching types available in Resolve, neat video for resolve Archives, configuring the caching format settings, and implementing caching in a way that optimizes the way the Neat Video plug-in interacts with the rest of our grading operations.

Resolve Caching Types

Resolve provides three main types of caching, which are complementary to each other: Source Caching (now referred to as Fusion Output Caching in R17), Node Caching and Color Output Caching.

Source Caching

You can think of Source Caching as “pre-Color Page” caching. It caches processor-intensive codecs such as H.264, neat video for resolve Archives, HEVC and some raw camera formats, neat video for resolve Archives, speed and retime effects, Fusion effects, and titles and generators. Basically, it caches everything before the Color Page. 

Node Caching

Node Caching is the primary form of caching inside the Color Page. It caches the results of any specific node in a node tree, including all operations upstream from that node. This cache remains intact until a change is made to that or an upstream node, at which point it must be re-rendered, neat video for resolve Archives. This is the type of caching we’ll use most when working with Neat Video.

Color Output Caching

The final cache stores the full output of the Color Page. This allows real-time playback of all color grades and effects on a clip, neat video for resolve Archives, but must be re-rendered if anything is changed in the Timeline, Fusion Page or Color Page.

Smart Caching vs User Caching

In neat video for resolve Archives to its various cache types, Resolve offers two ways to engage them: Smart Caching and User Caching.

Smart Caching

Smart Caching is a simple “set it and forget it” way of implementing caching in Resolve. When enabled, Resolve automatically renders things it deems performance-intensive, including certain clip formats, grading operations, plug-ins and timeline effects. And if there’s something that isn’t being cached automatically, you can manually flag it. 

Smart Caching is great for lower-performance systems that require a lot of optimization to achieve real-time playback. It can be difficult, however, to set up a predictable caching strategy due to the sometimes unpredictable way Resolve makes neat video for resolve Archives caching choices.

User Caching

Like its name implies, User Caching leaves the caching decisions up to the user. With User Caching enabled, we can select specific items, like an individual node, to cache. This is great on high-performance systems that can play most operations in real-time, but require caching for specific operations like noise reduction. Through User Caching, we can be strategic in the way we set up our node trees for best performance.

Configuring The Cache Format and Location

Cached video files in Resolve are meant to be “working” clips, in the sense that the user will perform additional operations on top of the cached clip. For this reason, it’s important to choose neat video for resolve Archives Render Cache Format that maintains the full signal bit depth, dynamic range and color fidelity of the original clip. High-quality 16-bit float mezzanine codecs, such as ProRes 4444, ProRes 4444 XQ or DNxHR444, are ideal for this purpose. 

Here are the steps to configure the Render Cache Format in Resolve: 

Click Project Settings

  1. Click on “Master Settings”
  2. Scroll down to “Optimzed Media and Render Cache” section
  3. Set the “Render cache format” to ProRes 4444, ProRes 4444 XQ or DNxHR444

 

For performance purposes, It’s also important to set the Cache Files Location to a fast storage drive, such as an SSD or RAID array, neat video for resolve Archives. We can configure that in Project Settings as well:

  1. Click Project Neat video for resolve Archives Click on “Master Settings”
  2. Scroll down to “Working Folders”
  3. Change the “Cache Files Location” to a location on a fast storage drive

 

Enabling Caching for a Neat Video Node

Now that we have our cache settings configured, we can apply it to a Neat Video node to cache its results and enable real-time grading.

In the first post in this series we determined that the Neat Video plug-in’s optimal placement is at the beginning of a node tree. Every other color grading operation is then performed on this noise-reduced foundation. If we employ Node Caching in User mode to cache the Neat Video node, the system will only have to process the plug-in once. Then, we can grade from the cached clip with real-time playback.

Here are the steps to enable User mode and Node Caching on a node:

  1. Click the Playback neat video for resolve Archives Choose Render Cache > User


     
  2. Right-click the Neat Video plug-in node
  3. Choose Node Cache > On

Identifying Cached Nodes and Clips

You can identify a cached node by the color of its title and number in the node tree. A node with caching enabled will display in red. The timelines on the Edit and Color pages also display these colors as thin bars above clips, showing the progress of the caching process. This is a good way to check that all frames of a clip have been cached.

 

Working With Caches

Items with caching enabled will render either on playback or in the background. There’s an option in Project Settings to enable background caching, and to set the inactivity time before the caching operation starts.

 

It's important to remember that a cache is only valid while all upstream operations feeding into it remain unchanged. Changing the settings on any operation upstream of a cached node or clip will require that node to be re-cached.

Finally, you can manage the cache files for a project through the Playback menu, under Delete Render Cache. This menu will allow you to delete ALL the cache files associated with the current project, UNUSED cache files, or cache files neat video for resolve Archives the SELECTED CLIPS. This can come in handy if you need to force a clip to re-cache for some reason.

 

Notes On Processing Order & Caching

Finally, it's important to be aware of the order Resolve processes and applies effects to clips, as it’s non-intuitive and can interfere with caching. Knowing Resolve’s internal processing order will help you avoid unexpected invalidation of cached clips, and help you plan your caching strategically.

Resolve calculates effects applied in the different pages in the following order: the Fusion page, then the Edit page, and finally the Color page. Within the individual pages, Resolve’s processing order follows a more logical path:

  • On the Fusion page, effects are applied according to the flow of the node tree

  • On the Color page, effects are applied following the flow of the Node Graph, generally from the Input on the left to the Output on the right

Wrapping It Up

Caching is a powerful way to increase playback performance in DaVinci Resolve, especially when using intensive plug-ins like Neat Video. The different caching types in Resolve all serve specific purposes, but for consistent and predictable behaviour with the Neat Video plug-in it best to use User Caching and turn caching “ON” for that specific node. And since we use Neat Video at the beginning of our node tree, we don’t have to worry about having to re-process the cache once it’s rendered. The rest of our grading operations will sit downstream from our cache, benefitting from the solid noise-reduced foundation we’ve created.

HOW TO: Apply Effects to Several Clips in DaVinci Resolve

Denoising, color correcting, and making other adjustments to video footage can be a long and tedious process. BUT, if you know how to copy the same settings to multiple clips, you can in certain cases cut down editing time significantly. In one of our previous articles, neat video for resolve Archives, we revealed how to do that in Adobe Premiere Pro, now it is DaVinci Resolve’s time.

"When working on a project where you need to apply the same effect or effects to a set of similar clips, you want to do that quickly yet correctly. There are several slow and quick ways to have it done. Choosing the right way may depend on a specific set of clips. In the case of applying Neat Video, a lot depends on the noise content of those clips. If you have several clips shot in similar conditions, by the same video camera with the same settings, then the noise in those clips is most likely the same. So if you can quickly add Neat Video with exactly the same noise profile and filter settings to each of those clips, then you can save time on building a neat video for resolve Archives profile and adjusting the filter settings for each clip individually. Obviously, this will only work well if those clips show the same noise. Otherwise, you would still need to treat them individually for the best noise reduction results."

In Neat video for resolve Archives, you can apply Neat Video and other effects in Edit, Fusion and Color pages. Each page has its own rules and its own versions of the Copy and Paste approach (when you first apply Neat Video to one clip, configure the filter for that clip and then copy and paste the configured effect on other clips).

1. Edit Page

Copy and Paste Attributes
First, apply Neat Video (Reduce Noise v5) to one clip and configure the filter for that clip, add other effects you want. Make other adjustments to the clip. Then select that reference clip, right-click and click Copy. Select the clips you want to copy the effects to, right-click and select Paste Attributes, check Plugins box and other boxes for the changes that need to be copied, click Apply.

 

Adjustment Clip
Unfortunately, due to the way Resolve supplies Neat Video with the frames the denoiser can’t be applied to Adjustment clips correctly. Most of the other effects are not troubled and can be applied to multiple clips this way.

While in the Edit page, switch to Effects Library, then click Toolbox > Effects and drag Adjustment Clip on to the timeline above the clips you want to adjust. Expand or decrease the length of the Adjustment Clip to suit your needs then apply to the Adjustment Clip all effects you want to be applied to the clips placed underneath.

 

2. Fusion Page

Here you can add a Neat Video node to one of the clips you want to denoise (Effects Library > OpenFX > Neat Video > Reduce Noise v5), build a noise profile and adjust settings, neat video for resolve Archives. Then right-click the Reduce Noise v5 node and select Copy. One-by-one select other clips you want Neat Video to be applied to and paste Neat Video into the Nodes canvas. The Reduce Noise v5 node will be placed between MediaIn and MediaOut and inherit all the filter adjustments from the parent node. This will work for other effects exactly the same way.

 

3. Color Page

2.1. Add the sample clip to the project

1. Configure a new project in Resolve

Go to Preferences to set up the Media Storage locations where all media files are stored:

2.3. Configure Neat Video

1. Open Neat Video plug-in window
  1. Drag-n-drop Reduce Noise v5 to the node of the clip in the Nodes Editor panel. This will enable the Settings tab in the OpenFX  panel.
  2. Click Prepare Noise Profilein the Settings panel to open the Neat Video plug-in window.

The Neat Video plug-in window will open and display the current frame from the clip.

2. Build a noise profile for the clip

To reduce noise in this frame and in the whole clip, Neat Video needs a noise profile describing the noise properties of the clip. You can prepare such a profile using the Auto Profile function:

Neat Video will automatically find an area without details and will analyze noise in that area to build a new noise profile:

 

  1. Visually inspect the selected area. It should contain no visible details, only noise; otherwise the noise profile and subsequent noise reduction may be inaccurate.

If the selected area does contain any details, then move the selection to a featureless area or simply draw a new selection in such an area (the selection must be at least 32x32 pixels large). Then click the Build Profile button.
